Europe is full of historical attractions and monuments, but the oft-overlooked features are the many significant bridges in its cities. They're not just practical, they're also often beautifully crafted and play important roles in history. Travel to Paris, Prague or Rome to learn more about these iconic structures.
Of all the striking bridges in Paris, the most lovely is surely the Pont Alexandre III, dating back to the 19th Century. It connects the Grand and Petit Palais on the right back with the Hotel des Invalides on the left back, the most famous of all Paris hotels. One of the requirements for the bridge was that it must not obstruct the view of the Invalides and Champs-Elysees, resulting in a very low bridge only 40 metres wide. Decorated with lampposts and sculptures of cherubs and nymphs, the bridge is an unmissable attraction.
Charles Bridge is at the top on the list of attractions to visit whilst in Prague. This stone and Gothic bridge was built in the 14th century and was commissioned by Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. The bridge is immediately recognisable for its 30 Baroque figures which stand along each side. When looking for accommodation you'll have many options. The four-star Adria Hotel Prague is one of the best Prague hotels in the city and like the bridge, dates back to the 14th century.
Of Rome's five great bridges, the Ponte Sant'Angelo is one of the most significant. Meaning "the Bridge of Hadrian", this Roman bridge is located near the Vatican City, completed in 134 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian. It was used by pilgrims to reach St Peter’s Basilica, but in the seventh century, both the castle and the bridge took the name of Sant’Angelo, as legend has it, an angel appeared on the roof of the castle to announce the end of the plague. Nearby you'll find fantastic Rome hotels. The Grand Hotel Fleming is walking distance to St. Peters Basilica and Ponte Milvio.
